Norah’s Shortbread

This is the first video I made of Norah baking shortbread. She even credits “Marion” who originally taught her this recipe. Watch the full video here – https://youtu.be/05zX1Q-EdCo Since posting this I have remade a shorter version –https://youtu.be/9bTSOdS_xW4

Norah’s Vanilla Dutch cake

This short video shows the results of this recipe. I think I actually cooked it under Norah’s supervision. Clazien Pleban gave Norah the recipe. The short video clip is here –https://youtu.be/m8lx_wxSYTw

Nonna Caterina’s Ragu Part 2

In this second video Elena and Nonna Caterina finish the Ragu and then cook the meatballs. It was a fantastic day of eating and learning about how to prepare mouthwatering Italian meals. The video can be found here – https://youtu.be/J5a9cZSLcLc

Norah’s short pastry

This video was made while I was living with Norah. She wasn’t in great health but she was still keen to show me how to make “Short pastry”. The video can be found here – https://youtu.be/Fs-piTCd40s

Nonna Caterina’s Gnocchi

We filmed this video at Elena’s house before lock down. It was a great seeing Nonna Caterina, with her daughter Elena and grand daughter Emily, creating bowls of delicious gnocchi. The videos can be found here – Part 1 https://youtu.be/gbv0Oxxkqsg and Part 2 https://youtu.be/QuGVpNVNNps

Nonna Caterina’s cotelette

This was such a special day. On this day 66 years ago Nonna Caterina was on her way to church to be married. So it was a day of cooking and reminiscing. Wonderful. The video can be found here – https://youtu.be/PG48q9RiObk

Ester’s baklava

I was thrilled to visit Tamara’s home and meet her family. On this day Ester made baklava for me. Tamara and her family are Assyrian and came to Australia 18 months ago. It’s important to hear about how families from Iraq have been spread across the world. The whole video can be found here – https://youtu.be/Qq0F56TyzR0

Janet’s Iraqi Dolma

It was a great day of learning, cooking and eating. Janet, Albahaa, Nadia and Chris prepared a feast and I was able to video all the steps. Albahaa and his family are from Mosul, Iraq and have been in Australia for approximately 18 months. Please watch the full video here – https://youtu.be/6oTLVeuwIIA

Beryl’s Mars Bar slice

I love visiting Beryl and her husband Max. They definitely provide a link to my parents and they rekindle the memories of us all growing up in the 1960s and 70s in West Footscray. A simpler time. Today Beryl showed us how to make another “no bake” slice. Excellent. Please watch the full video here https://youtu.be/IENg6DOv_ck

Mona’s Apple Tart

Before the Soda bread had left the oven (see Ep 19), Mona had started on her Apple Tart. I learnt about “blind baking” with pastry weights which was all new to me. The full video can be seen on Youtube – https://youtu.be/6BcHvTyY_uo

Nonna’s Sausages

We filmed this back in July 2022 but it has taken me a while to complete the editing. I ended up with about 8 hours of footage and with a lot of help from Tom (tutor) I have trimmed the whole video down to 9 minutes. Slightly different style here – more of a Vlog. It was such a fantastic day and I am so glad that I was able to be there to see the whole process. Thanks to Nonna Caterina, Anthony and Jo – team effort. The full video is on Insta and Youtube – https://youtu.be/0DRVeCArpvw

Sausages Paradiso

I was keen to enter a little competition that required a 7 minute video. So I revisited Nonna’s Sausages and learnt how to add titles to honour my favourite Italian film – Cinema Paradiso. I think the trimming of this video, new titles and new intro music has really helped the video. Here is the Youtube link – https://youtu.be/2rvOjTRXccc

Beryl’s scones

My friend Di and I are astounded to see how easy it is to create a tray of scones. Watch the full video here – https://youtu.be/Kyq3Ve7J2jY

Nonna Caterina’s Ragu Part 1

This video comes in two parts. I spent time with Elena and her mum Caterina and watch her cook a “meat sauce”. The whole video of Part 1 can be found here – https://youtu.be/h7yUdxo5_Xo

Helen’s Spanakopita

In this video Helen demonstrates the work involved in creating Spanakopita. It’s great watching Baia and her mum create this delicious Greek dish. The full video can be found here – https://youtu.be/y9FIA9TKIOE

Beryl’s lemon slice

This video was made in February 2020 before any lock down. Beryl is a natural. Such a pity that both Di and I have failed to absorb our mum’s baking abilities. The video can be found here – https://youtu.be/o24i0oXPDuE

Norah’s florentines

This short video clip was made in late November 2017. Norah had been in hospital and I had decided to make Florentines – strictly adhering to her recipe cards. The short video clip is on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/p/CE8_OWbDSAR/

Beryl’s yo yos

A triumphant return to makingitumumsway. Most of 2020 was a write off as I was unable to visit any mums due to our extended lockdown in Melbourne. So glad to be back and to share this video with everyone. https://youtu.be/eQkmsJxPilk

Lada’s Borscht

I was so lucky to be invited into Lada’s home to video herself and her daughter Victoria cooking the Russian dish Borscht. What a great day. The full video can be found here – https://youtu.be/aEP5DkgOMVg

Janet’s Orange cake

On the same day that Janet cooked Iraqi Dolma (see Ep 16) she also produced a magnificent cake. Janet made this cake without referring to a recipe so if you are keen to “get it right” then you will need to follow the full video on Youtube – https://youtu.be/9r6C2ZVKg60

Mona’s Soda Bread

This was a great day. Mother and son (Mona and Declon) cooked Soda bread and an Apple tart for me. This first video is Mona making Soda bread. It’s a very Irish thing to do and it’s great to see how quick and easy it was to prepare. The Apple tart video is coming soon. https://youtu.be/2uXmeL_hYGo

Helen’s stuffed Peppers

We filmed this way back in January but I wasn’t happy with the sound quality and so thought we would re film it. However, during our recent lockdown I decided to tidy it up as best as possible and share it with everyone. The full video is here – https://youtu.be/oFMyyaKk3eM

“I learnt to knit on 9 inch nails”

“Clean up as you go”
